Using Collections at the Niels Bohr Library & Archives

When using archival materials in the Niels Bohr Library & Archives at the American Institute of Physics, either remotely and/or in-person, please be aware of the following terms and restrictions:

Reproducing material

  • Due to copyright rules, do not copy more than 1/3 of any collection; ask staff for exemptions
  • Reproductions must comply with current copyright regulations
  • Do not share copied materials with others without the written permission from staff
  • Digitization is $1.00 per page if this work is done by staff

Archival materials

  • Records 25 years old or less of the American Institute of Physics (AIP), its Member Societies (50 years for American Astronomical Society (AAS)), or other organization cannot be accessed or copied without the written permission of an officer of the organization
  • Some collections or items may have special access or publication limitations placed on them by donors or other rights holders; staff should alert you of any restrictions

Quoting/citing archival materials

  • Do not quote from any of the materials to which you have access to without the permission of the proprietor of the literary rights to that material
  • Paraphrase material only when it is essential to express its historical and scientific substance
  • Give credit to the Niels Bohr Library & Archives whenever documentary source material from the Library is quoted, or summarized, or otherwise used in a paper or publication
  • Note: Authors are encouraged to deposit a copy of the published results of the research with the Niels Bohr Library & Archives.

Working on site at NBLA: Reading room rules

  • Masks are required in the reading room at all times.
  • Food or beverages are not allowed
  • Backpacks and other bags must be left behind the reference desk or in the coat closet
  • All materials must remain in the reading room
  • Do not fold, re-arrange, or disturb the physical state of archival items; ask for out cards if needed
  • Only use pencil when working with archival materials
  • Digital photography is permitted. Printing is $0.20 per page
  • Our book collections are open stacks with the exception of special collections materials. Inquire with staff if you wish to access special collections
