Marc Brodsky

Marc Brodsky

Marc H. Brodsky served as the Executive Director and CEO of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) from 1993 to 2007. On his retirement, the Marc H. Brodsky Fund for Oral History of Physicists in Industry was established to capture behind-the-scenes stories of important industrial physicists and their discoveries.

During his tenure, Brodsky oversaw dramatic changes in AIP publishing and publishing services, as nearly all editorial, production, distribution and business processes were changed to deal with electronic publishing. All of the journals and magazines that AIP published went onto the World Wide Web, increasing access to physics literature to more people than ever before in history. AIP expanded its science communication offerings via the Web and other media outlets, including the regular production of science news segments for local TV news programs, reaching more than 65 million nightly viewers.

Brodsky is a physicist and electronics engineer. Prior to his AIP position, he worked at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center for 25 years as a researcher (in semiconductor physics and devices), inventor, manager and executive. He received his bachelor’s, Master’s and doctorate degrees in physics from the University of Pennsylvania. He has served as an adjunct or visiting faculty member or researcher at Columbia University, University of Paris, Dundee University, and the Max Planck Institute (Stuttgart).

Brodsky is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the IEEE. He has published over 90 technical papers and 30 invention disclosures, edited a book on amorphous semiconductors, and co-edited another. He holds seven U.S. patents in semiconductor technology and consumer electronics.
