Geologists Estimate Seismic Risk with Traffic Noise

August 1, 2003

An earthquake's potential damage to a city depends on what the city was built on, since firmer ground keeps buildings' foundations in place. Geologists and seismologists are now assessing ground quality using the vibrations caused by traffic. The faster those vibrations travel, the firmer the ground. This information will help create new hazard maps.
