Beth A. Cunningham

Beth A. CunninghamBeth is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Association of Physics Teachers.  She earned a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master of Arts degree, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Kent State University, all in physics. In 1989 she joined the physics department at Bucknell University as an assistant professor, attaining full professor in 2002. In 2006, she was appointed as Provost, Dean of the Faculty, and Professor of Physics at Illinois Wesleyan University.   

Beth joined AAPT in 2011 and she provides leadership on a number of physics education initiatives including professional development for physics educators at all educational levels.  She also works on increasing the diversity, equity, and inclusion in physics including co-leading a project to retain women faculty in physics and astronomy departments as well as leading a project to facilitate cultural change in physics and astronomy departments.  Beth serves on a number of boards including the Council on Undergraduate Research, AIP Publishing, and the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives.  Beth is a Fellow of the AAAS and APS.

Talk Title: Socializing Change for Your Societies

Abstract: During a period of immense transition, buy-in from all parts of your community is essential. This talk will discuss ways to communicate with your board, your members, and your broader community to help chart a path forward as meetings are reimagined. The presentation will discuss ways to be transparent about the impact of meeting costs on member society budgets. In addition, the politics of selecting meeting venues in states having laws that do not align with societies' values and the impact on climate and the environment will be discussed.
